Short Stories by Antony J Waller (a miscellany of tales)

WELCOME

Thank you for visiting my site.

I enjoy writing and as a writer try to give the reader something which I hope they will enjoy reading. Here are a few of my short stories I hope you will find time to read, and which I hope too you will enjoy.

Flash fiction: An autumn romance

It was late into autumn and the stranger was desperate to secure a berth on the ship bound for England and for home. Awaiting the evening tide he found solace in a quayside hostelry and in front of a warm fire his thoughts soon turned to the wife he had not seen in many years. The landlord wearing an air of sadness and who had clearly enjoyed better times interrupted, engaging him in conversation, a conversation which would change his life forever. He talked of his life and of the wife he had left behind and suddenly produced a faded, yellowed photograph. One the stranger instantly recognized. It was his wife, the woman he was sailing home to.

At The Beach

A gentle breeze rippled through the  fronds of the palm tree creating shadows which dipped and moved gently over the solitary figure reclining on the sun bed beneath. Helena was enjoying a day at the beach, a silk sari draped across her body. She leaned onto her elbow and the sari slid to the white sand revealing a lightly tanned body. She made no attempt to retrieve it and reached out for the pitcher of cold tropical fruit juices to re-fill her glass. Ice cubes clinked as she poured, droplets of condensation running down her arm from the pitcher. Helena sat up, sipping slowly and pulled her sunglasses from where they had caught in her hair. She shook her head, her long tresses falling across her shoulders, perched her sunglasses on her nose and gazed towards the waters edge. White topped waves broke onto a gently shelving shore, the spent water running noisily up the beach over the wet glistening sand before sliding back into the next oncoming wave. The sunlight glinted and reflected off the pale greens and blues of the water. A lone figure was swimming towards the shore.

The Wrong Letter

The Wrong Letter - A Misunderstanding

It was Friday and the clock on the office wall said ten minutes to eleven in the morning. A bright, sunny blue sky, birds singing in the trees sort of morning. Unfortunately for Simon the clock in his head had stopped somewhere in the middle of the night. A cold, dark night. A night with a distant buzzing noise that reverberated in his ears. He tried to shut out the noise and look away towards the window and the world outside, only he was unable to. Simon's eyes were fixed on the letter, a piece of paper he was holding in his hands. Shaking hands. Hands that slowly put the letter down in front of him. Hands he raised to cover his eyes in an attempt to hide in the darkness away from the letter's contents.

The Fortune Teller

"Do you mind if I sit down and share your table?"

Laura was standing with a cappuccino in one hand, balancing a plate with a piece of carrot cake and her bag in the other. It was not quite lunchtime and already she was feeling a little nervous. She was early for an appointment and hoped a quick coffee and something to eat would take her mind off things.

The Dinner

The music was playing softly in the background and Errol Brown was singing “It started with a kiss, I never thought it would come to this”, as he held the telephone in his hand. He smiled to himself. He had not had the kiss, not yet, and he was not sure if it would come to ‘this’, whatever that may be. After all it was only the beginning.

After just a few rings the phone was answered and he wanted to be the one to speak first.

“Dinner tonight, six thirty for seven. Wear something classy Honey, its special.”

“Sweetie”, she replied, “are you suggesting I am ever…”

She stopped herself, which was unusual for Ellen. She was usually direct, at times even feisty. Perhaps she detected the emotion in his voice, a slight nervousness that had not been there before. He sounded different this time and had spoken straight away when she picked up the phone.  She let him be assertive.  Ellen wanted to make things easy for him. She thought it could be the beginning of something.
