Author Challenge 20: Knowing your Place

...in loving memory of our dear, lost friend James "Jim" Johnson. We'll miss you, Jim.

Welcome to Challenge 20, where writers consider their Place in the universe

Do you know your Place? Can you describe a Setting well enough to put us there?

That's our new Challenge for April. Last month 16  contestants created great Characters. This month we'll focus on the places our characters might go.

Many writing advice sites tell us to de-emphasize descriptions of places and focus on characters, dialogue and plot development. The trick, then, is to choose your battles. Make your setting unique, unusual, vivid and unexpected. Don't meet for coffee in a diner or for beers at a pub; deliver something different.

Challenge 20 will let you stretch your legs in a number of ways.

Your setting can be real or fictional; and your entry may be a memoir, poem, short story, novel excerpt -- even something in the Travel or Local Guides section. Of course you may mix in elements of plot and character as appropriate, but Setting is the focus this time around.

How will this work?

You'll enter by posting the URL to a Helium-title from an appropriate channel. This can be an earlier work posted to an existing title, a new work/existing title, or a brand new title for a new entry. We'll have bonus points for NEW entries.

If you need titles, please use Submit a Title. That system is working very well lately.

Your entry will be expected to present ONE INTERESTING SETTING. Don't bore your readers to tears with the ordinary -- find us the telling details.

Length limit: 4 Helium pages, as displayed on the site. (About 1250 to 1300 words)

Time limit: We'll offer at least TWO WEEKS for new entries.

The competition: We'll be using our new "grading" system, introduced in Challenge 19 and modified for this contest. See Reply #4, the Challenge thread:

Forum Thread for Challenge 20

In the end, the contestant with the most points wins. Prizes to be determined.

We'll also have bonus points for NEW entries and for your submitted Critiques. The other assorted bonus point opportunities have been omitted this time -- they did not affect the results at all last time around.

This Challenge opens Saturday, April 10, 8 pm EDT (East Coast time).

BONUS POINTS AVAILABLE:

  • For NEW entries: 10 points. You must note and request this bonus.
  • The Critique Bonus: 2 points for each entered piece you critique. These critiques will be structured, not free-form. Exact guidelines will be posted shortly.

Don't forget to VOTE on our newest poll, right-column!

Reflections: Smalltown Baseball by Ann Hinds

Congratulations, Ann! You did a fine job setting the scene of smalltown baseball.

And now, to keep the lawyers happy, the fine print...

  • One entry per contestant.
  • All articles written and submitted to the challenge must be in HELIUM TITLES,  Creative writing: Drama, essays, humor, memoirs, novel excerpts, poetry, reflections, satire, short stories, songs or Travel. • Deadlines for submissions, for Leaping, and for finalizing the contest will be posted on the challenge zone and in the forum thread.
  • Decisions of the contest host are final. In the event of a math error, any participating member may request a recount before the contest is finalized.
  • Cash prizes, if included, will be awarded via PayPal only. Since Helium members must have an open PayPal account in order to receive payments, this method should be acceptable to all users. No other payment method will be employed. This is NOT an official Helium payment, and WILL NOT be shown on the member's Earnings page.
  • Display of the winner's article on Helium's front page is at the discretion of staff and editors. No reason need be supplied, in the event that an article is deemed unacceptable for Front Page display. It's unlikely that pieces from the Creative Writing channel will be featured on page one at Helium.
  • These rules, and any changes to them, will be displayed in the third Post Reply (Challenge Thread) and on the matching Challenge Zone.
  • Additional information regarding this contest may be displayed in other areas of the thread or zone, and may also be supplied at a later time. Failure to modify these rules to include such additional information does not negate the inclusion of those conditions as part of the Challenge guidelines and rules.

Here are our new, special Critique Rules

GUIDELINES FOR OUR NEW CRITIQUES:

We'll issue simple scores for each entered article, each on a 1 to 5 scale

1 = "just barely ok"

5 = "absolutely amazing" (don't be too liberal with either of these extremes)

Contestants will earn the sum of the points from each critique. We'll do some math tricks at the end, in the cases of unequal quantities of critiques.

For each entry, please rate the following parts, on the 1 to 5 scale:

  1. SETTING - How memorable was the setting?
  2. WRITING - In general, consider style and quality of the entire piece

Just use the author's NAME and a numbered list, like the one above, with those two titles, and add your scaled rating for each. Leave commentary for the end of your critique. If you'd rather not add comments, that's fine, too.

ALL CRITIQUES SHOULD BE POSTED TO THE CHALLENGE THREAD.

Remember, each contestant EARNS 2 POINTS for each posted critique!

In loving memory: James Johnson.

We’ve suffered a grave loss, my friends. James Johnson, aka crazy hat guy, is now in a slightly different paradise. His daughter Jessica informed the Helium community of his untimely death and we very much appreciate it.  She felt compelled to tell us because he spoke of us often, it seems. We were his friends as he was truly ours. We shall miss him terribly, for his warmth and humor, his comforting words when we needed it, his wealth of knowledge which will forever be at Helium as a tribute to him and his love for both man and beast and yes, gosh-darn-it, for those goofy hats that made us laugh so much. However, we must wonder, shall we do without him?

Although he loved his Nevis island paradise he has surely found and even better one. Rest in peace, James, we will miss you.

James being James

Snoppy's got it right!

Recall, if you will, Snoopy sitting atop his doghouse tapping along on his typewriter. He always started his epic tale with, "It was a dark, stormy night...." Didn't that one phase tell you so much about what type of story he was embarking upon? It conveyed instant images and even a feeling. Heck, you probably got a chill running down your spine, didn't you?

Well, true gifted writers of fiction know this and use it to build anticipation, to form a "home" for their characters and a location, real or imagined, for whatever mayhem may insue within the story. Who knew we could learn so much from a cartoon dog?

Snoopy knew how very important setting was for a piece of fiction. Too bad he never got around to finish his story! That round head kid, Charlie Brown and the twittering Woodstock were too big a distraction. Pity! Stephen King may have had competion!

Glory, this is a wonderful zone. The baseball picture couldn't be better and although we are not high-class enough to afford a scoreboard, I could swear that the child on the left (who is not invested in the game) is one of our kids. I want to scream at the picture and tell him to pay attention. Great job on all the pictures.

Thank you, Glory, for posting that beautiful tribute to James, our cherished Caribbean Pirate. We'll always set a place for him at our table. He was a true treasure.

Just to let you know, the picture under my name (Annalou's Adventure into the unknown) is of the town gate at Djene, Mali in West Africa. In the background one can see the walls of the old city.

Glory, another question. I would like to submit a pic. When I read the comments and where the others submitted their articles I didn't see any links to photos. Am I still not reading/understanding all of this?

You did fine Annalou. This as as good a place as any but you may want to read the rules and in there you will find a link (It will come up blue when you land on it) and that will take you to an adjoining site where we have our votes and any comments for entries. I do welcome you. Hope you have as much fun here as we all do. I'll post your entry right now.
